There really are countless virtual software instruments out there. So much software, so many different instruments to choose from. How does one even get started?
I mean, you have Logic Pro itself (if you use Logic Pro as your DAW), Native Instruments, Toontrack, Arturia, Spitfire Audio, Spectrasonics, Vienna Symphonic Library, Steinberg’s Orchestral Tools, etc. How do you pick one and start making music? Well, I guess that’s just it… You actually have to pick one and go…
Just Go With The Stock Instruments At First
One can do a lot with just Logic Pro stock instruments, especially if you really take the time to investigate all the parameters/settings. Like anything else, it will ultimately come down to how much experience one has with any given piece of software. The more you are familiar with Logic Pro’s instruments (for example), the more you will know if you can rely on one of its instruments to do the job you are looking for at the moment.
Spend Some Time With the Software
Getting to know a software like Native Instruments, especially one of their Komplete Collector’s Editions, would take an extraordinary amount of time, but man, do they have some really nice instruments available for musicians (and non-musicians, I guess).
I do NOT have some of the others mentioned above. Still, I DO use Logic Pro, Native Instruments Komplete 14 Collector’s Edition, and Toontrack’s EZ Drummer, Keys, and Effects compilations at the moment (I’ll probably get their Superior Drummer at some point).

Record Different Versions of the Song
One way around having to choose is NOT to choose. I.E., go ahead and write the piece of music using “whatever” instrument, the whole time knowing that you are going to create a completely separate, unattached piece alongside it for comparison’s sake.
